This week’s visual symposium discussed the myriad mediums, processes, and approaches to sculpture in the modern day. People have become more resourceful than ever in their creative endeavors and are using materials that include concrete, trash, fiber, earth, shadow, water, reflections, and so on. Sculptors have realized that different materials carry different messages and can be used to emphasize the point of their work. No longer are artists constrained by the standards of society. They can make statements on much deeper levels now that they can use all the materials and tools at their disposal and not rely solely on stone, wood, clay, and the other stereotypical mediums typically associated with sculpture. I found the large divergence in modern day approaches to sculpture compelling, and I intend to be more open-minded to new materials and processes in my work. I do not want to limit myself by clinging to my preferred mediums when I could learn so much from working in new and unexpected ways.
